Shade Sail Repairs & Maintenance

Advanced Shade Systems repairs and maintains shade sails and shade structures across Brisbane, South East QLD and regional Queensland. We work on commercial sites, council installations, and residential shade sails, whether we originally installed them or not. Our repair team can restore a sail that's lost tension, restitch failing seams, patch holes and tears, replace worn hardware, and clean sails to close to their original condition. We've been designing and manufacturing shade sails since 1996, so the crew assessing your repair understands exactly how the sail was built and what it will take to get it back into good working order.

Not sure what you need? Book a repair assessment

Repair jobs rarely arrive with a clear scope. Councils and property managers often call us for a small repair and ask us to review the rest of the sails at the same time. Homeowners call about a sagging sail and discover the mounting hardware is the real problem. If you're not certain what's needed, book a repair assessment. Our team will inspect the sail on-site, tell you honestly whether it's a repair, a re-stitch, a re-tension, a full replacement, or a combination, and give you a fixed-price quote to move forward.

For commercial and council sites with multiple sails, the assessment can cover the whole set in one visit. You get a condition report on each sail, plus a prioritised list of what to fix now and what can wait.

Repair and maintenance services

We offer the full range of shade sail and shade structure repair services, delivered on-site where possible or in-workshop where the job needs it.

  • Shade sail cleaning. Removes accumulated dirt, mould, algae and bird droppings that build up over time. Regular cleaning also lets us catch small issues before they become expensive ones.
  • Re-stitching and re-sewing. Standard shade sail thread degrades under UV over several years. When the seams start failing, a full re-stitch with fresh long-life thread restores the sail's structural integrity.
  • Patching. Holes, tears and small rips can be patched using matching fabric so the repair blends into the sail. Suitable where the damage is localised and the rest of the sail is in good condition.
  • Re-tensioning. Shade sails lose tension over time from wind loading, thermal cycling and general wear. Re-tensioning restores the correct shape, removes fluttering, and extends the sail's working life.
  • Hardware replacement. Turnbuckles, shackles, wire rope, D-rings and fixing points can corrode or wear out even when the fabric is fine. We replace worn hardware with stainless steel components matched to the sail's size and installation.
  • Structural inspections. Post lean, footing movement, corrosion in the frame and loose fixings all affect safety. We inspect the structure alongside the fabric and flag anything that needs work.
  • Written condition reports. For councils, property managers and commercial owners, we provide written reports on the condition of each sail with recommendations and a costed action list.

When to repair, and when to replace

Not every damaged sail is worth repairing. As a rough guide:

  • Under 5 years old: repair is almost always the right call. The fabric and frame have plenty of working life left.
  • 5 to 8 years old: depends on the damage. Localised issues (seams, hardware, tension) usually make sense to repair. Widespread fabric fatigue often doesn't.
  • 8 years and older: replacement is often the more economical option, especially if the fabric warranty has expired. A new sail resets the warranty clock and gives you another 10 to 15 years of confident life.

We'll tell you honestly which side of the line your sail sits on when we inspect it. No pressure to buy new when a repair will do the job.

Our repair process

  1. Contact us. Send us a photo of the sail and a description of the issue, or call and describe what you're seeing.
  2. On-site assessment. For sites in Brisbane and SE QLD, we come to you. For sites further out, we can quote from photos and a phone conversation if the issue is straightforward.
  3. Fixed-price quote. You get a written quote covering the recommended work, the timeline, and any options (repair vs replace, on-site vs workshop).
  4. Repair. On-site for smaller jobs and re-tensioning. In-workshop for full restitchings, structural fabric repairs, and hardware overhauls, where the sail comes down for the work.
  5. Reinstall and handover. Sails removed for workshop work are reinstalled to the same fixing points, tensioned correctly, and handed back ready to go.

Who we work with

Shade sail repair and maintenance suit any owner with an existing shade sail or structure that's not performing the way it should. The work we do most often falls into three groups:

  • Councils and government asset managers with public shade sails across parks, playgrounds and community facilities that need regular safety inspection and periodic repair
  • Commercial property owners and facility managers with shade installations across car parks, retail, hospitality and industrial sites
  • Residential owners with home shade sails needing repair, re-tensioning or cleaning after storms or general wear

Our broader work includes designing and delivering new commercial outdoor shade structures, wholesale shade sail manufacturing for the trade, and wholesale shade structures for installers. If a repair reveals the sail is beyond economic repair, our design team can quote a replacement using the same fixing points.

Areas we service

Our repair and maintenance work covers Brisbane, the Redlands, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast. We regularly travel further into regional Queensland for commercial and council jobs on the right brief. If your site sits outside SE QLD, contact us, and we'll work out whether we can service it directly or coordinate a solution.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a shade sail repair take?

Most repairs take between one and three weeks from assessment to reinstall. Simple on-site jobs (re-tensioning, hardware replacement) can often be completed the same day. Larger workshop repairs (full re-stitches, extensive patching) typically take one to two weeks in the workshop, plus removal and reinstall. We confirm the timeline in the quote so you know before we start.

Can shade sails be repaired on-site, or do they need to come down?

Both, depending on the job. Retensioning, hardware replacement, small patches and cleaning are usually done on-site. Full restitching and larger fabric repairs require the sail removed and taken to the workshop, then reinstalled once the work is done. We'll tell you which applies at the assessment.

How do I know if my shade sail needs a repair or a replacement?

The main factors are the sail's age, the extent of the damage, and the condition of the fabric overall. Under five years, repair is almost always the right call. Between five and eight years, it depends on the damage. Beyond eight years, replacement is often more economical. We give you an honest recommendation after the assessment rather than pushing the more expensive option.

Do you repair shade sails you didn't originally install?

Yes. We repair shade sails and structures regardless of who built them. Our team assesses each sail on its own merits and quotes accordingly. Where the original fabric is discontinued, we can match to the closest current equivalent so the repaired area blends in.

What's included in a shade sail safety inspection?

A safety inspection covers the fabric condition (fatigue, tears, seam integrity), the hardware (turnbuckles, shackles, wire rope, fixing points), the posts and frame (lean, corrosion, weld condition), and the footings. You get a written report with recommendations and a costed action list. For councils and commercial owners with multiple sails, we can inspect the whole set in one visit.

Request a repair assessment

To book a repair assessment, use the form and add a short description of the issue, or call 07 3823 5644. For commercial and council sites with multiple sails, tell us the site address and roughly how many sails need review, and we'll organise the visit.
