As a return client, Brisbane City Council approached Advanced Shade Systems to design and install a new shade solution at the Sandgate Public Swimming Pool. Their request was that a new shelter be positioned to the side of the children’s splash pool hard up against the boundary fence. With newly poured, highly reflective concrete surrounding the pool, the existing conditions made it hard for parents to watch their children from the pool edge as it was often too hot or had excessive glare.
Several constraints were imposed upon the Advanced Shade Systems team for this project. These included:
The final design solution resulted in a CL655 cantilevered structure being installed. This structure allowed for the posts to be hard up against the boundary fence whilst providing shade outwards towards the splash pool edge.
Additionally, by cantilevering the structure outwards, there was no need for extra support posts, restricting movement underneath the structure. In order to tie in the new shade structure with existing elements of the swimming pool, Advance Shade Systems took a new approach and used shade fabric with printed images for the back wall of the structure.
This allowed for an artwork depicting sea life reflective of the artificial creatures inside the splash pool. As a final addition, the use of waterproof vinyl fabric allowed for the structure to be entirely waterproof from the top, allowing it to be used in all conditions.
